At Moon and Lola we believe that you should constantly be learning. In this blog post we would like to share some of the things we've learned here in our studio while researching the history of women's equality. We've been reminded of the importance of voting and doing what we can to ensure that equality for all is a part of our daily decision making process.

Following our conversations and discussions and being awe struck by what the women before us in history went through, and for how long they had to maintain such a high level of commitment and sacrifice, we felt a great conviction about doing our part to further equal rights for all.

We hope you will enjoy reading a small bit of history and that, afterwards, you will download one of the FREE mobile wallpapers we have for you at the end of the post!

A FEW FUN FACTS AND DEFINITIONS !!

SUFFRAGE: the right to vote in political elections

HOW TO AMEND THE CONSTITUTION:

1. Can be done by either of the following two methods (NOTE: Interestingly, the President does not have a constitutional role in the amendment process.)

   a. Congress proposes an amendment with a two-thirds majority vote in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

   b. A constitutional convention is called for by two-thirds of the state legislatures.

      2. The proposed amendment is then sent to the governor of each of the states for their legislation's consideration.
        3. A proposed amendment becomes part of the Constitution as soon as it is ratified by three-fourths of the States (38 of 50 States).

          AN ENLIGHTENING QUIZ !!

          Q. In what year did women in the United States win the right to vote?

          A. June 4, 1919 congress passed the proposal  /  August 18, 1920 ratified by the states

          Q. How many years of constant effort had supporters devoted to the women suffrage campaign?

          A. 72 years (from 1848 - 1920)

          Q. What suffrage leader was arrested, tried, and fined for voting in the 1872 election?

          A. Susan B. Anthony and a group of fourteen other women in Rochester, New York, registered to vote at a local barber shop in 1872. On November 5, 1872, she cast a ballot in the presidential election. On November 28, the fifteen women and the registrars were arrested. Ms Anthony was fined $100 for voting and she refused to pay.

          Q. On Aug. 18, 1920, what state became the 36th to approve the 19th Amendment, thus completing the ratification process?

          A. When the roll call vote came on the amendment, Harry T. Burn heeded the plea in a letter from his mother, encouraging him to support ratification, and he voted yes, breaking the tie. Tennessee provided the 36th and final state needed to ratify this landmark amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Moon and Lola layered necklaces on model

When it comes to wearing jewelry, it's all about telling a story. Make layering necklaces a piece of your story. Unleash your creativity and express yourself using different pieces that all come together for one gorgeous look. Some of our favorite celebrity fashion icons such as Kendall Jenner and Rihanna are experts at layering; their styles are copied the world over.

PRO TIP: Use a Necklace Extender to get exactly the lengths you want for each of your layers! Using a necklace extender allows you to alter how long your specific pieces are. Say you have two super cute chokers such as Roxanne Leather Choker and a Kwai River Enamel Choker and want to wear both, use a necklace extender so that you can wear both in a layered look.
Psssst . . . our necklace extender can also be used for extending bracelets and anklets!

Moon and Lola Necklace extender graphic

And the awesome thing about it is that there is no way to mess it up! Necklace layering can be done in a variety of ways. You can pair a statement necklace like the Cyprus with a wonderful Grace Pearl necklace, single initial Dalton Necklace, and a gorgeous delicate Pineapple Necklace. Or if you're in the mood for a bit more fun you can pair an awesome chunky chain Ajman Necklace with a sparkly Rhinestone Choker, your personalized Metal Nameplate and gorgeously simple Dove Necklace 💎✨ The possibilities are endless! It's all about having fun and expressing your own style!

Rhea Choker, Dove Necklace, Evil Eye Swarovski Necklace

Pyrite Rhea Choker, Metal Dalton Charm, Tokpli Necklace, Agbandi Necklace

Pyrite Rhea Choker, Sahara Choker, Brass Constellation Necklace, Metal State Necklace

Roxanne Choker, Sahara Choker, Sirkeci Necklace, Mason Charm, Noah Charm, Apex Chain, Lazare Earrings

          Cheshire Monogram Necklace, Coeur Necklace

Get additional ideas for layering using our Tulum Necklace from one of our previous blog posts "How To Layer Your Tulum Necklace".

Now that we have gone over the basics, its your turn! Open your jewelry box and start telling who you are without saying a word by layering some of your favorite necklaces. Don't be afraid to mix various shapes and lengths and explore the fun of incorporating different colors, materials, metals and styles.

Francis + Benedict Team visiting the Prefecture du Zio village

A little over a year ago I had an awakening experience. The weird thing is that I didn't even know I had been asleep. I realized that for the last several years, I’d been going through life in a fog. I call it my divorce fog. I then started to notice that other people in my life were in a fog as well - some in a child raising fog, others in a work fog.

Too often we find ourselves on this merry-go-round of life and we don’t realize our need to pause, reassess, regroup and refocus. My fog came in the form of a creative block, depression, and the feeling of being lost, all while getting up, getting dressed, meeting with people, telling myself, “smile and fake it until you make it, Kelly!”

          My Journey to Enlightenment

Last August I was working on a photo shoot with my good friend, Julianne Taylor, founder of home décor brand Taylor Burke Home, when she told me she was going on a trip to Togo, Africa to help Francis + Benedict, a non-profit organization that empowers Togolese seamstresses by providing them with dignified and sustainable employment. I told her it had always been a dream of mine to teach women around the world how to make jewelry so that they could marry for love and not for financial survival. I saw my grandmother and mother stay in relationships for financial reasons, and continue to see so many women doing this today.

I’ve always been passionate about being financially independent which is why I went to pharmacy school. I knew that my success as a female entrepreneur and business owner demonstrated to the world that it was not only possible, but it was possible while doing something you loved (which is why I quit pharmacy and created Moon and Lola).

When Julianne suggested that I go to Togo, I told her that I wasn’t in the financial position to travel across the world. She lovingly argued each and every excuse I could come up with to not ask for financial support - I told myself I didn’t deserve it, my business was very much in need of my attention, my Mom was sick and needed me home, and the list went on…

But with Julianne's encouragement I decided to start a fundraising campaign and I was blown away by the generosity I received and the people who showed up for me and made financial contributions. It was incredibly humbling to say the least.

Asking for and accepting help has never been one of my strengths but my Togo experience taught me that asking for help was not only okay, but it actually feeds the souls of those who love me and want to support me. The amazing people who sponsored my trip were on that journey with me and I will forever be grateful for their gifts.

So, one month later I was on a plane to Africa that would change my life forever!

          Arriving in Togo

Meeting Francis Avoyi and, his wife, Benedict was amazing. Francis had lived on the streets of Togo from the age of 7 to 17 and now he helped so many people around his home, village, and country. In 2015, he met Katie Walters who was on a mission trip to Togo and later went on to found Francis + Benedictan organization whose profits are used to resource community leaders in Togo, enabling them to continue projects that benefit orphans, widows, and those suffering in poverty.

Katie was not only talking about doing something impactful - she was doing it. I remember feeling like I wasn’t good enough or deserving enough to do this, but Katie humbly shared with me some of her trials and tribulations, which helped me see that I didn’t have to be perfect to make a difference.

Francis, Kelly and Benedict in the Togolese village

The Togolese villages were similar to those we see on TV and we think to ourselves people don’t really live like this in the world today – in mud huts without electricity and adults and children walking around barefoot. One thing that really hit home with me was that these beautiful people had never even seen their own reflection in a mirror – they didn’t know what they looked like. We had Polaroid cameras with us and took pictures of them so that they could see themselves.

Let me just say that seeing someone see themselves for the first time was an incredibly moving experience that forever changed me. We brought the villagers flip-flops as gifts and they were received which such joy and gratitude.

Togolese children with their Polaroids and flip-flops

The amazing seamstresses that we met were so excited to simply go to work each day and do their sewing in a garage with other women who had become their dear friends. They lit up when they saw one another. The power of these women seeing each other gave them strength and life, which gave me strength and life too. Francis told me that when the seamstresses first started, they never even cracked a smile. Now we were witnessing laughter, singing, love and hope in that garage.

moon and lola seamstress with manual sowing machine in togo africa

I brought my jewelry tools and supplies and I was able to teach a handful of women some basic jewelry making skills, but my trip was too short to make the kind of impact I wanted. So I wondered, what if I could bring home some of the scraps from the gorgeous fabric skirts and incorporate them into a new jewelry line Moon and Lola could help seed the efforts to provide the skills and jobs to more women in Togo and beyond? So, with the blessings of Katie, Francis and Benedict, that is what Moon and Lola has set out to do!

When I boarded the plane to go home, I told my friends that I had never felt so safe. I told them there was no way that plane was going down because I had so much to do when I got back to Moon and Lola! I knew that I must live my life with more purpose and help support women and children in need.

          Our New Mission

So, I’m officially transforming myself, and Moon and Lola, to focus our efforts on our new mission and journey to support women and children. I’m accepting my beautifully messed up self and all of my good intentions and trying to be more real, more vulnerable, more accepting and less judgmental of myself and others. I am making Moon and Lola a true women for women organization that loves, supports, uplifts, and encourages women near and far. We have so many ideas and plans in store for how we can work towards this new mission.

We are so excited to invite you to experience the first chapter, the Togo Collection. Enjoy and let us know what you think.

          Xx,

          Kelly

Life is wonderfully amazing and hard all in the same breath. I have lived an amazing life with great adventures that have taken place with friends on a sofa, at Oprah magazine and Good Morning America in New York, and underwater with an elephant in Thailand. I have also lost my marriage, never had children for multiple reasons (I suppose,) and I struggle with my weight, anxiety, and insecurities daily.

As a little girl I always knew I came from strong women. My grandmothers both were strong survivors that had met life's challenges head on. My Grandma Kelly was born with epilepsy and was never able to drive, live independently, and was never seen for her talents as much as she was for her differences. My Grandma Jessie was a widow that worked and lived in the mill village while raising 6 children. And anyone who knows my mama knows she is the epitome of a strong southern woman!

Grandma Kelly, Mama (Doris), Grandma Jessie

I always wanted to learn from their strengths and struggles and help other women be even stronger than they were able to be.

At Moon and Lola it has always been my goal to make people happy, but over the past year I have come to realize that that is not enough. I want Moon and Lola to make a difference in the world. And the only way to do that is to change myself and how I approach my business.

In the last year, I went on two life-changing trips to Africa. When I returned I knew exactly what I had to do! Those experiences made me want to have Moon and Lola and myself, personally, help others and have a greater purpose.

moon and lola map of africa in watercolor

I had to make Moon and Lola a TRUE women for women purpose driven business, that helps and inspires women near and far just like the women of Africa inspired me! I am full of passion and drive now!

I now KNOW I was meant to go on these trips! It was all part of God's plan for my life. My life is forever changed!

The amazing women that work at Moon and Lola are on also on this journey, taking each step right alongside me.

Our lives at Moon and Lola are in a metamorphosis right now. We are ready to spread our wings and become the brave women we were always meant to be!

When Taylor Swift officially went from country singer to pop artist she did a social media blackout to wipe the slate clean and start fresh. Pink Out was Moon and Lola's version of a blackout, in our signature color!

We followed that up with a social media storm asking #whoisedwardterrylandscape

We're now ready to answer that question and we want the world to know that we all are Moon and Lola! We are every race, size, age and range of abilities! We are women who want to embrace and uplift each other.

Meet Alex, one of the first to say #iamedwardterrylandscape.

Moon and Lola - Alex is #iamedwardterrylandscape

Moon and Lola will be releasing different collections tied to specific local and international women-focused organizations with blog posts highlighting different women and their stories.

We will host events featuring women speakers and organize focus groups on uplifting one another without judgment. We will also continue our Teen Board efforts with local high schools, teaching young women how to speak up and conduct themselves in business.

We're so excited this journey is finally here and we can't wait to introduce you to some of the brilliant, amazing, and daring women we have met so far. And we've only just begun . . .

Please be a part of our change! We promise to make you proud!

Staff Moon and Lola We are so excited to release the latest Moon and Lola Artist Spotlight collection by South Carolina's own Megan Carn. And based on the response to the "call for pet models" we had in March, you are as excited as we are!

We hope you will take few moments to get to know Megan a little better so you can appreciate her perspective on life and art.

          Enjoy!

Moon and Lola xx Megan Carn a painting in progress

Q: How long have you been painting?

A: I was "crafty" throughout elementary and high school, but I didn't take my first painting class until my sophomore year of college... I was an art major! I always felt so behind because I didn't know things everyone else had picked up in previous classes, but I made it.

          Q. What is your biggest source of inspiration as an artist?

          A. This is a hard question. The base of my work stems from color and how I love color theory, but I pull inspiration from everywhere. Coffee table books, interior magazines, and more than anything, painting until I strike an idea that I really like and then expand on it. I get ideas from time to time and even if I don't have the chance to paint it, I write it down to be explored later.

          Q. If your personality were a color, which would it be?

          A. Pink, definitely. There are so many shades, and it's my favorite!

Moon and Lola xx Megan Carn her favorite color is pink

          Q. What did you use as inspiration for your collection with Moon and Lola?

          A. ALL OF THE PHOTOS AND STORIES everyone sent! I love my dog, and I love that SO many people love theirs too. It's hard to explain, but I read the story, looked at the photo, and chose the colors based on that. Sometimes, a palette just jumps out at me, and other times, I decide simpler is better. It's a process, and I never know how it will turn out!

Moon and Lola xx Megan Carn with her dog

          Q. What is your favorite fashion trend right now?

          A. Overall dresses- love those. Also, mules and slides. Count on me wearing them long past the trend. Finally, I've been noticing a ton of gingham around and I love that.

          Q. Where are you from?

          A. I grew up in a small town- Saint Matthews, South Carolina- and my parents are still there. The population is only about 2,000 people! Now, I live in Columbia.

Moon and Lola xx Megan Carn with her loved one and some of her original artwork

          Q. Current favorite song?

          A. I'm really into Panic! At the Disco, and I have been since high school. So, anything by them will never get old. Juice, by Lizzo, is also on heavy repeat.

          Q. Your favorite podcast?

          A. My Favorite Murder is a golden go-to, and then the How Did This Get Made? podcast about bad movies. I listen to anything true crime/comedy, especially when I run out of episodes on my favorites!

          Q. What are you currently reading?

          A. Nothing. Whoops.

          Q. Your favorite movie?

          A. The Birdcage, Moana, and The Great British Baking Show. (That's not a movie, but I love it.)

Moon and Lola Megan Carn black labradoodle painting in progress

          Q. Your favorite artist?

          A. I love Britt Bass, Blakely Little, and Rachel Castle. All so cool.

Our custom acrylic wedding invitations are the perfect alternative to the paper invites most couples choose to send. We love that they're not only a keepsake for your loved ones to remember the date, but they're also a way to make your guests feel extra special. Depending on your personal style, you can choose from a traditional font or a modern font. According to The Knot, you'll want to send out your invites 6-8 weeks before the big day. That means order your invites about three months out to ensure they'll arrive in time to be mailed out. You can purchase envelopes for your invites here.

These days wedding cakes are made in all shapes, sizes, flavors, and styles. Once you and your fiancé make the trip to your local bakery to decide on what your cake design will be, you're ready to begin dreaming of how you'll top your cake. Our custom acrylic cake toppers are available in a handful of different designs, colors, and heights so you'll be sure to find the perfect match and fit for your cake. You can incorporate your new married last name with the "Mr. and Mrs. _____" cake topper, keep it simple with the "Cheers" cake topper, personalize it with a script or block monogram topper, or add a touch of southern charm with our MLxxEM woven or interlocking monogram cake topper. There are SO many to choose from! We recommend ordering your cake topper a month away from your wedding date and keeping it in a safe place leading up to the big day - it will be fragile!

          Production Time: Two Weeks

As you enter the final stages of planning your reception layout and seating chart you might realize one thing - filling the "empty space" can be challenging! Don't worry, we are here to help with our selection of custom wedding signage. Your guests will want to know where to go to sign the guestbook and drop off gifts, what they're being served during cocktail hour, what your wedding hashtag is, and what table they'll be sitting at. We've got a sign for each of these needs and more! Since the production time for most of these pieces is two weeks, we recommend ordering these at least a month before the big day. That way you'll have plenty of time to do a seating chart mock up before it's showtime.

For today's post we thought it might be fun to start with one of the first steps in the wedding planning process that comes after getting engaged: asking your bridesmaids! After all, you really can't do it without them and their support will be such a big help during this busy time.

Savannah, Moon and Lola's Production Manager and bride-to-be, recently asked her own bridesmaids and of course, included Moon and Lola.

Using our Metal Single Letter Necklace and a personalized printable card, Savannah sent packages to each of her bridesmaids! The best part? Each girl can wear their new jewelry on Savannah's wedding day next summer.

Asking your bridesmaids (and maids/matrons of honor) this way is so easy and one less thing for you to worry about as a busy bride. The best part? We've created a few cards you can download + print to to give to each gal. Check 'em out below...

We suggest picking out a special pair of earrings, a necklace, or a bracelet you'd love to see each girl in on the wedding day. You can decide to have them all match or mix it up depending on their personalities. Either way, it'll be the perfect gift! It's the perfect fruit to eat on a hot summer day and it's naturally the queen of all fruits because it has a crown!

Pineapples are also considered an expression of "welcome" throughout the South and symbolizes assets we appreciate in our home – friendship, hospitality and warmth. ( PS... It also has a few other meanings of being welcoming in a grocery store, but that's not we're talking about here! )

Moon and Lola is traditionally a southern brand so of course we love the symbolism behind it. Just remember that a pineapple a day keeps the worries away!   So, now that you know the meaning behind the pineapple it's time to treat yourself to some pineapple-themed jewelry and accessories.

That's Cajun French for "Let the good times roll!" Mardi Gras is here and whether you've celebrated the iconic tradition for years and years or are relatively new to the idea then this blog post is for you! We sat down with Christina, one of our fabulous sales associates at the Moon and Lola flagship store and Louisiana native, for a little Q+A sesh to get the scoop on all things Mardi Gras. Enjoy!

          What is Mardi Gras?

Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday," and it represents the last day of the Carnival season and celebration before the Holy Period of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras is full of tradition and celebration!

Moon and Lola Mardi Gras Blog Post French Quarter New Orleans

          Photo: Valerie Esparza

Why is it an annual event in Louisiana?

Carnival season and Mardi Gras occur in Louisiana because the state was originally colonized by the French Catholics. New Orleans and South Louisiana, with their unique French heritage, celebrate each year with parades, masquerade balls, picnics, parties, and of course King Cakes.

What is the tradition of King Cake?

It's a tradition celebrated at offices, schools, and family gatherings for the entire Mardi Gras season. This festive Mardi Gras dessert is a blend of coffee cake and a cinnamon roll topped with purple, green, and gold icing or sugar. Each King Cake has a tiny baby inside (generally made from plastic nowadays, but traditionally it would have been made from porcelain or even gold). The lucky person who receives the slice of cake with the baby has the responsibility of holding the next King Cake party, or brings the next King Cake for the office.

There are many famous bakeries in Louisiana that bake and serve King Cakes. A few that come to mind are:

Since moving here to North Carolina, I've found that the best (and most authentic!) King Cake is served locally at La Farm Bakery in Cary

If you're feeling up for the challenge and want to make a King Cake yourself, you might want to give this recipe from The Kitchn a try!

What does Mardi Gras mean to you?

I was born and raised in South Louisiana and Mardi Gras has always been such a special, fun, colorful, and festive season to me! It's a holiday about religion and tradition that brings families, friends, and neighbors together to celebrate. It's about the music, parades, food, balls, debutantes, masquerades, masks, and costumes. Mardi Gras is so deeply rooted in every Louisianian and in many cultures around the world. It runs through my blood!

Which Mardi Gras traditions are the most memorable to you?

Some of the fondest memories of my youth were catching beads, doubloons (coins), and throws (trinkets), along the parade route. Most of which I still have today! Getting home after the parade with your family and friends and going through all the bags of treasures caught from above is still one of my favorite pastimes. The best way to catch items from a float is to make eye contact with a rider and yell, "Throw me something, Mister!" The most prized throws are the krewes' signature throws. "Krewe" is the word used to describe social organizations taking part in the Mardi Gras festivities. One of the most famous krewes, Zulu, throws out hand-decorated coconuts!

Mardi Gras is the largest masked party in North America. Masks add an element of mystery, glamour, and intrigue when worn, especially around this particular holiday in the city. Each mask is unique and the creations are endless! I've collected Mardi Gras masks for as long as I can remember. A fun tradition my husband and I share is that each year he'll surprise me with a unique Mardi Gras treasure to add to my collection.

Awards season continues with another wave of fabulous red carpet style at the 2019 Academy Awards! While there were more noteworthy looks than we can fit in one blog post, today we're sharing a recap of our favorites - and how we'd style our Moon and Lola jewels with each look. Enjoy!

Moon and Lola Oscars Red Carpet Style Blog Post Kacey Musgraves

We love this look on Kacey. Texture texture and more texture! Since the gown itself is the center of attention, we'd complete the singer's look with our lightweight and simple Ankara Earrings in silver to complete (rather than compete with) this look.

Moon and Lola Oscars 2019 Red Carpet Style Blog Post Elaine Welteroth

In case you were wondering, the fringe trend is here to stay! In jewelry and in fashion. The Teen Vogue editor-in-chief is chic as ever in this fashion-forward gown. The fringed silhouette and beaded texture of our Mykonos Earrings in white match perfectly!

Moon and Lola Academy Awards 2019 Red Carpet Style Blog Post Regina King

We love nothing more than a bridal-inspired red carpet moment, especially as seen here on Regina King. Everything about this look is perfect for a modern bride! Just add our Luna Rhinestone Teardrop Earrings for a sparkly finishing touch.

Moon and Lola Oscars Red Carpet Style Blog Post Helen Mirren

It's no secret that there was a major color theme on the red carpet at this year's Oscars... Pink! While there were so many beautiful gowns in our favorite hue, Helen Mirren looks absolutely stunning in this one! We couldn't help but think of how well the variations of pink in our MLxxTP Gender Reveal Earrings match the gown's tulle bodice.

Moon and Lola Oscars Red Carpet Style Blog Rachel Weisz

Hello, dream dress! Or, should we say dream set? Everything about this look on Rachel Weisz screams perfection. The color is powerful and flattering, the skirt/top combo is fashion forward and fresh, and that headband is the perfect accessory. If it were up to us, we'd style this look with our brand new Lazare Earrings in Vermillion.

Moon and Lola Oscars Blog Post Brie Larson

Also trending on the 2019 Academy Awards red carpet? Metallics! Brie Larson's gown was edgy and chic with a shimmery silver hue. While a gown this flashy doesn't need much to complete the look, we'd keep it simple with our silver Radio City Earrings.

Moon and Lola Oscars Blog Post Tina Fey

Cobalt blue is your color, Tina Fey! The actress/comedian looks glam as ever in this gown. While she kept her jewelry and accessories simple for the red carpet, we could have LOVED to have seen her rocking a pair of our MLxxTP Confetti Post Drop Earrings. They're the perfect match to her fun-filled personality!

Moon and Lola Oscars 2019 Red Carpet Blog Post Elsie Fisher

Elsie Fisher was the queen of cool at the 2019 Academy Awards! She achieved outfit perfection with her tailored suit, bow-adorned handbag, and sleek hairstyle. The only thing missing? A pair of our Old English Cufflinks.

Moon and Lola Oscars 2019 Blog Post Eva Chen

We saved our favorite for last! Eva Chen nearly broke the internet when she wore this one-of-a-kind Valentino Couture gown for a walk down the red carpet and its easy to see why. We love the color obviously, but the silhouette is simply unforgettable! Since the dress itself is very dramatic, we'd complete the look with our Salla Posts. Their design is simple and reminiscent to Eva's ruffled neckline.

Thanks for stopping by! If you loved this post then you'll definitely want to check out this one on street style and this one on celeb-inspired style.

We sat down with Morgan Rollinson, the talented artist behind our latest Artist Spotlight collection, for a fun little Q&A sesh. Enjoy!

Q: How long have you been painting?

MR: Painting has always been a hobby of mine. I studied design in college and spent a summer in Italy painting figures. While I work full time as a designer, I turned my painting passion into a side hustle at the beginning of 2018 and have been growing my art business since then!

Q: What is your biggest source of inspiration as an artist?

MR: I love Matisse and the way he used brush strokes and color. I also find a lot of inspiration from fashion and textile designs.

          Morgan Rollinson Floral Artwork

Q: If you could trade places with any person for a day, who would you pick and why?

MR: Ina Garten because she's wonderful and leads a beautiful life.

Q: If your personality were a color, which would it be?

MR: Maybe blue because it can be bright, bubbly and outgoing but also a cool mellow tone.

          Morgan Rollinson Painting

Q: What is your favorite quote?

MR: The whole poem "If" by Rudyard Kipling.

Q: What did you use as inspiration for your collection with Moon & Lola?

MR: Color was a big inspiration and component in my collection with Moon & Lola. I achieve a whimsical and abstracted style by pulling out the colors that I would mix together to paint an object, and instead, separately applying them to the subject--which gives this collection a fresh, bright, and lively feel.

Enjoy!

          Natasha B.

          College Student and M&L Model

          Shop the Look: Serena Hoops

Q: What is your favorite piece of M&L jewelry and why?

My favorite piece of M&L jewelry is the Hampton Handcut Monogram Necklace because it goes with everything and is super cute as a gift for anyone!

Q: If your personality were a color, what would it be?

So although my favorite color is pink, if my personality were a color I would say it'd be orange because it represents youthfulness, creativity, and adventure; all the things that best describe me!

Q: Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration everyday through my friends, my family, and also meeting new people! Everyone knows something you don't and we all have different lives and stories to tell... all you have to do is listen!

Q: What is your dream job?

My dream job would be in entrepreneurship, starting with an idea and turning it into something amazing that leads towards making people's lives easier. More specifically, I would start a fashion brand or boutique, so I can work on all aspects of management and marketing - which I love. However, I would like to at first work for a textile/retail related company and work my way up to gain experience in the industry before I venture off and try it on my own!

Q: If you could trade places with any person for a day, who would it be?

I think I would be Emma Stone because I've always wanted to be an actress and see what the movie industry is like. Plus, I think she's an amazing actress!

Q: What is your favorite piece of M&L jewelry and why?

My favorite piece of M&L jewelry is the Isobel Bracelet! I just got it and I absolutely love it. It's classy and elegant, but not too flashy. It goes with a variety of different outfits. I use it to dress up jeans and a cute tee for class or I wear it with a dress for a more formal event.

Q: If your personality were a color, what would it be?

If I were a color I'd be blue! I like to travel so the blue of the ocean or the blue of the sky are my favorite.

Q: Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration in nature and music. Sitting outside on a perfect fall day with the sun on my face and listening to the birds feeds my creativity.

Q: What is your dream job?

My dream job would be traveling the world and helping those less fortunate. I am thinking about joining the Peace Corps.

Q: If you could trade places with any person for a day, who would it be?

If I could trade places with one person for the day, it would be Oprah. She also holds a position of great influence and power. I would use that position and power to help those in need.

Q: What is your favorite piece of M&L jewelry and why?

My favorite piece of M&L jewelry is my Birthstone Necklace. It's allowing me to represent my baby girl and my baby in heaven.

Q: If your personality were a color, what would it be?

If my personality were a color it'd be yellow: vibrant, energetic, and warm.

Q: Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration on my farm! I find it in the freedom my baby girl has as she runs through our bright yellow field. I find it in the creek flowing through the back yard. I also love to be inspired by fashion... for this, I always go to the "gram". ;)

Q: What is your dream job?

My dream job is to own a Lilly Pulitzer Signature Store.

Q: If you could trade places with any person for a day, who would it be?

If I could trade places with someone it would be Jenna Fischer (Pam from The Office). She's so funny, and I think cool to see a day in the life of an actor.

Q: What is your favorite piece of M&L jewelry and why?

I love the Serena Hoops because of the versatility of them. They go with literally any outfit and are so easy to style up or down!

Q: If your personality were a color, what would it be?

Anything pastel! I feel that I am a generally bubbly person, but I'm very relaxed and calm until I come out of my shell. Pastel colors are beautiful, kind, and welcoming.

Q: Where do you find inspiration?

I get my inspiration from the people I interact with daily in my classes, social media, and jobs. I relate to those who relate to me so I find people to look up to who have similar goals but are one or two steps ahead so I can model my growth through theirs.

Q: What is your dream job?

I would love to have my own business in social media marketing but also if I could work for a fashion or accessory brand as their social media marketer/merchandising manager.

Q: If you could trade places with any person for a day, who would it be?

I really love Zendaya and Ariana Grande. I feel that they speak a lot on social change but represent themselves as confident women who know when not to share certain things. I truly admire their style, poise in the media, and overall talent.

The Cheshire Monogram Necklace is my absolute favorite piece of jewelry. It is timeless and goes with any outfit!

Q: If your personality were a color, what would it be?

Yellow! Positivity, loyalty, and happiness. These are the three things I strive for daily.

Q: Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration in a lot of things but when it comes to my blog I find the most inspiration from my girlfriends! I always love chatting with them to find out what they're most interested in at the moment. I also get inspiration from other creatives.

Q: What is your dream job?

          Marketing/PR

Q: If you could trade places with any person for a day, who would it be?

This is honestly such a hard question because I love the life I have. However, if I had to choose one person it would be Elle DeGeneres because she brings so much happiness around the world and I love that about her. Plus, her show is A+!

Today is #NationalBossDay and to celebrate, we're sharing a few of our favorite memories we've made over the years with our favorite boss ladies: Kelly (a.k.a. Lola) who is our founder, lead designer, and CEO; and Katie our rockstar President. Fun fact: did you know... waaaay back when, in the early days when Kelly first started M&L Katie was the first and only employee! We've grown so much since then and it wouldn't have been possible without this dream team! It's safe to say we truly admire each of these ladies's determination, leadership, and inspiration to continue to build our brand to its full potential.

Celebrating our debut on GMA's Deals and Steals segment in Raleigh, NC in 2017

          From our Marketing Manager...

"My favorite memory is when I met Kelly for the first time. I was getting my hair done at a local social in Raleigh and my hair stylist told me she was the owner of Moon and Lola. She had just opened a store in Charleston, SC and I wanted to move there so we immediately bonded over that. Very long story short (people around here say I like to give too much detail), Kelly took my information down on a phone bill she had in her handbag, one thing lead to another and I became the Retail Manager for our retail stores. Then another door opened and I became the Marketing Manager. This is my favorite memory of Kelly because of every detail that followed and this one moment was the start of it all."

“I have many great memories of Katie throughout the past four years but the one that sticks with me most is from our recent photoshoot. We had been working for two days straight on this photoshoot and even though she was sick and had many other things to do, she stuck right by our side ensuring we got to eat or rest our feet for just a second. She stayed with us from start to finish each day! That meant so much to me because it showed how much she cares about us and M&L”

           From our Director of E-Commerce...

"In May of 2018 I broke my leg. The previous year Katie had broken her leg so she knew exactly what I was going through and also what I was going to go through! She did me a wonderful favor by NOT telling me ahead of time any of the setbacks or discouraging things that were to come. That's how Katie is, sweet and kind and super considerate!!"

"One of the many thoughtful things that Kelly has done for us, has to be when she surprised us all one Christmas with truly the most heart touching gifts. It had been a particularly hectic holiday season for us here at Moon and Lola. We were all working our hardest to 'Make Christmas wishes come true!' for our customers when, one by one, we began to notice that there was quite a pile of wrapped gifts under the office Christmas tree. Later that day we were all in tears or near tears when Kelly began to hand out the gifts to each of us! As we unwrapped those Christmas presents we were astounded to find such personally significant items. Kelly had selected and shopped for gifts that were specifically fit for each of us. Lord only knows how much time went into her selection of each one of those presents! It was a very special time for all of us."

          Christmas 2017

          From our Customer Experience Specialist...

"My favorite and first memory of Kelly is the one that started my M&L journey! I was listening to the radio and heard Kelly being interviewed about M&L being one of Oprah's Favorite Thing's that year. I was so blown away by her candor, her passion, her creativity, and her sense of 'happy' that I knew that was a person and a company I wanted to work for! Through a series of finding connections and several emails I had the chance to meet the M&L staff and Kelly herself and was offered the opportunity to join the team! It's amazing what a series of circumstances led to for me to join the M&L family and all because of Kelly's story."

"Early on in my conversations with Katie, we discovered we both had a love of history and had big imaginations when we were growing up. We shared memories of "playing" colonial or frontier times and laughed over how serious we used to take it! I always know that when I find a strange or geeky memory from my childhood, Katie can commiserate (and there are probably embarrassing photos of us in track-suits to boot!). It has been a joy having her lead the M&L team!"

From our Director of Logistics and Distribution...

"I met Kelly when I was a buyer for a local bead store-she was one of our best 'Bead Picnic' customers and would come into our events and clear off the tables... she was always nice to me even though I wasn't part of the usual floor staff that helped customers. Once she complimented me on a crazy military-style jacket that I'd just bought and it made my day! She remembers small details about people, that kind of thing really makes an impression."

"Katie and I have the same birthday and we both have an unusual place in our hearts for miniature things. Once she gave me some of the smelliest cheese I've ever had (Maytag) and a bottle of wine for something I'd done, it totally surprised me and I'll never forget how delicious that cheese was."

From our Apex Retail Store Manager...

"My favorite memory of both Katie and Kelly was this time last year when Kelly's beautiful home was set to be featured in a photoshoot and article for Walter Magazine. It was such an exciting time for Kelly and for Moon and Lola! In preparation for the photoshoot, Kelly needed help getting her jewelry cabinet (yes, she has *that* much jewelry) and she knew how much I love visual merchandising from my retail background so she invited me over to help her. Kelly, Katie, myself, and the rest of the team had so much fun getting her home photoshoot ready. The very next day, we all came back and got to play dress-up and be in the photoshoot! Then, once the magazine launched, Kelly invited everyone back for a big celebration. We had the. best. time!"

From our Accounting and HR Manager...

"When I first started working for Kelly it was her mission to teach me the world of Moon and Lola. She brought me along with her to NYC to pick out supplies for a new product line. We visited countless places where Kelly walked in and knew the  employees by name. We walked what felt like hundreds of miles to make sure we cover as much ground as possible in our short time there. At one point we walked past a homeless woman sleeping on the ground, shoeless. Kelly immediately stopped in her tracks, she simply could not pass by this woman without doing whatever she could to help. Kelly made her way to the closest shoe store and without hesitation purchased a pair of shoes and a few socks for this stranger she saw on the street. In this moment I knew I was right where I needed to be at Moon and Lola. This woman was going to teach me things far beyond the scope of the job. These past 3 years have continued to be an exciting adventure that has taught me incredible lessons. Bonus fact: My little girl loaned her strawberry backpack to Kelly for the trip. Kelly insisted on carrying it all over the city, taking photos along the way to show my daughter when we returned."

          Market trip in NYC

"A few years ago Katie and I attended Atlanta Market together along with our wholesale team and Kelly. Since I was Kelly's executive assistant at the time, this was the first opportunity I had to get to know Katie. We were both there to support the team working in sales but found some time to sneak away and plan a birthday surprise for Kelly. We were in a different city, had no car and no idea where to go for supplies. We had such a fun adventure, found everything we needed and pulled off the cutest surprise birthday celebration for Kelly. I was able to learn a lot about Katie on this trip. She will always do whatever it takes to get the job done, and she will do it with class and a smile on her face... even if that means carrying cases of champagne through AmericasMart while still recovering from a leg injury. This is the same work ethic Katie maintains through her work days today, a true leader and example to all of her employees."

          From our Director of Wholesale...

"I have so many wonderful memories of Kelly and Katie that’s it’s hard to choose just one. Seven years ago I showed up at a teeny tiny studio in downtown Apex with a mutual friend of ours who said her friend needed some help. Kelly's business had taken off and they were hiring anyone that breathed. Literally. The first night they tasked me with printing UPS labels. I guess I nailed it because they told me to come back the next day. They said they needed some help in customer service and sat me down in front of an inbox that was 400+ emails deep (not kidding) and said if I had any questions, to just yell out. Well, of course I had questions (ha!) but I just plugged away as best as I could. Every day they told me to come back and I did and the rest is history. I never interviewed for the job and I was never trained. I just showed up and I never left. I guess you could say they got stuck with me. Early on Kelly put me in charge of "special projects" and it's a role that I've never taken lightly or for granted. She has put great trust in me over the years, handing over some of her most sensitive, high-touch accounts and projects. I've learned so much alongside Kelly and Katie and I've enjoyed watching the company grow. We've traveled to markets together, opened retail stores, landed huge accounts, experienced countless “firsts” and learned many, many lessons (some the hard way.) Some of my fondest moments include: making Oprah's Favorite Things (twice!); the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale (and the fainting sofa); HSN (cry baby Kate); and Good Morning America. I want to thank both of you for such an amazing ride. There's never been a dull moment. I love you both. Xo"

          From our Production Manager...

"We had 3 girls get engaged all around the same time at Moon and Lola. Of course, this gave us a reason to celebrate! Our party planning committee put together and amazing bridal shower at a local restaurant after work. Kelly gave each bride a special gift as well as $150 M&L bucks to purchase decor for their upcoming weddings!! It was such a surprise and each girl loved the ability to get decor for their special day!"

"When closing the Charleston store we worked long, I mean VERY long, hours. Despite it being a chapter closing for M&L, I never laughed as hard as I did on this trip. By the time we got back to the hotel all we wanted to do was take a hot shower and snuggle up in the beds watching Friends. When Katie went to turn on the shower, water went EVERYWHERE! It was hysterical and something I will laugh about for years to come."

          From our Production Specialist...

"I have two memories to share about Kelly. I am from Taiwan and moved to the United States as an adult. When I came here I took Irene as my American first name. When I started working at Moon and Lola I told people my name was Irene. Kelly didn't believe me and said she wanted to know my actual Taiwanese name and that she wanted me to help everyone learn how to speak it and that would be my name with my Moon and Lola family. So sweet. Another memory I have relates to time off which I request every year. Most of my family still lives in Taiwan. It is a long journey to Taiwan from America and I only visit once a year so when I go I stay for many weeks. The first time I asked for that length of time off to go to Taiwan, Kelly said she understood the importance of going home and that is was to maintain family relationships. Her marriage was to someone from outside the US so she really understood that this was about love and relationship and respect."

"Katie is such a nice, sweet person. I am one of the people that makes the jewelry and accessories that we sell at Moon and Lola. Production work can be physically difficult on your body and Katie understands that very well. She provides me opportunities to learn new skills and do other things for Moon and Lola that give my shoulders, neck, wrists and hands a needed break. She is a true sweet southern girl!"

          Thank you!

So, to Kelly and Katie... we hope you know how much we appreciate you and all that you do for us! You both are the definition of #girlbosses and motivate us to be all that we can be every day. Thank YOU!!!

We are *so* excited for today's blog post! If you follow us on social media, you might have seen us mention the Moon and Lola Happy Squad a time (or two). The Happy Squad is our group of fun, fashionable, ambitious, and hard-working brand ambassadors whose role is to share their M&L favorites with their followers. Totally cool, right?! We might be biased, but it's safe to say our squad of ambassadors is one of the best - it's made up of social media influencers, college students, stay-at-home mamas, young professionals, and more. Each of these women, while all very different, share one thing in common: their passion for the Moon and Lola brand!

Today on the blog we're sharing a Q+A with five of our Happy Squad members, including their favorite M&L jewels, personal style, and more!

Q: What is your favorite quote?

           My wedding ring.

Q: What is your favorite piece of M&L jewelry?

My favorite piece of M&L jewelry is my Cheshire Monogram Necklace because my husband got it for me for Christmas. I also love it because I love monograms! They're so classy, and never go out of style.

Q: How would you describe your sense of style?

I do like some of the trendy styles, but I love the preppy look. I love Lilly Pulitzer, J. Crew, and Loft. I like styles that are classic and will never go out of style.

Q: What is your favorite quote?

My favorite quote would be "If you're not laughing, you're not living!"

Q: Name one fashion accessory you'd never leave the house without:

I can never leave the house without earrings! I feel like I look so weird without them!

Q: If you could trade places with any person for a day, who would you pick?

If I could switch places with one person for a day, I would switch with Audrey Hepburn. I love her! She was so classy and tried to do what she could for those in need in other parts of the world.

Shop the Look: Bristol Necklace, Serena Hoop Earrings

Q: What is your favorite piece of M&L jewelry?

My favorite piece of Moon & Lola jewelry is the classic Acrylic Block Monogram Necklace that M&L is known for! I received my first Moon & Lola back in 8th grade after seeing all of the girls wear them in middle school as I am from M&L's hometown. I rocked that hot pink block acrylic almost every day of freshman year and it has my heart!

Q: How would you describe your sense of style?

My sense of style is just how I like to describe everything else in my world... a "fiesta!" While my style isn't specifically "preppy" or "trendy," I love bright colors, fun patterns, and unique lines.

Q: What is your favorite quote?

My favorite quote is actually my senior quote: "She believed the opposite of sin was to be gloriously and outrageously alive," which is a quote I found from a random book that was thrown away at the library! It perfectly summarizes how I try to live my life: unashamed and outrageously alive.

Q: Name one fashion accessory you'd never leave the house without:

I have to wear my family heirloom ring which I cannot do anything without and also a pair of stud earrings.

Q: If you could trade places with any person for a day, who would you pick?

I would hands trade places with Anna Wintour. I'd love to rock her famous sunglasses and be in charge of Vogue for the day.

The September playlist is a true mixed bag and we wouldn't have it any other way! Ariana Grande's "No Tears Left To Cry" is the perfect girl power anthem (and we listened to it about a million times during our photoshoot this week). Ben Rector's latest hit, "Drive" is #10 on the playlist - and was a top request from an Instagram poll we did a few weeks ago! If you're into the Folk/Americana music genre then you're going to obsess over #1, "Summertime Romance" by Johnnyswim. Or, maybe your totally fan-girling over Leon Bridges right now? We've got you covered with his latest, "If It Feels Good (Then It Must Be)". And of course, since we're 90s girls at heart, we had to include a hit from our childhood crushes, the Backstreet Boys for #7!

So tell us... What types of music would you like to see on our next Spotify playlist? Are you in search of the perfect fast-paced workout songs? A dinner party playlist? A few calming songs to listen to at work? Or would you like to hear more from your favorite music genre: R&B? Pop? Country? Leave your answer in the comments below and you just might see your song featured on our next playlist!

With the arrival of the new season, we are so excited to share with you the inspiration behind our latest collection! We  wanted the pieces of jewelry in the Fall Collection to reflect the beautiful, colorful changes in nature this time of year. Each piece is named after a popular autumn travel destination... places we've visited before and long to return to, and places that make up our travel bucket list.

This collection is truly unique in that these pieces are neutral, timeless classics that will carry you through season after season! We hope you find yourself attending a chilly fall festival in the Acadia Necklace paired with your favorite knit sweater, embarking on a roadtrip up the east coast while wearing our Seneca Hoops, or sipping your favorite hot apple cider recipe on the front porch in our Putnam Earrings. So, whether you will be spending this fall adventuring all across the country or with loved ones close to home... trust us, there are memories to be made while wearing these pieces.
